RECREATION THERAPIST

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Resident and Family Services, the Recreation Therapist will provide recreation therapies to residents according to their assessed needs. The Recreation Therapist will work in collaboration with all other clinical care providers to optimize the residents’ experience.

Main Responsibilities:

General
Provide for recreation therapy activities including outings in accordance with established policy, physician’s orders, the resident plan of care and within the scope of practice;
Develop and sustain a plan of care to meet residents’ assessed need;
Ensure and approve planning for activity calendars in accordance with the care plan goals and preferences of the residents on each home area;
Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of care delivered;
Demonstrate a professional working knowledge of all equipment used in the delivery of care;
Identify appropriate therapeutic recreation goals and interventions on the care plans of identified residents.

Care Coordination
Establish job routines for all staff involved in restorative care;
Effectively participate in conferences with the interdisciplinary team providing care to the residents;
Ensure that care provided is documented as required in a timely manner using the assigned documentation tools.

Successful candidates will possess the following:

University degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies, and/or a degree in Health Sciences with a post graduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation, from a recognized university or equivalent education and experience;
Membership in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO);
Current registration as a Recreation Therapist (R/TRO) or in process of registration with TRO;
A minimum of 3 years experience working with seniors;
Demonstrated ability to conduct in-service education sessions;
Computer proficiency or ability to learn widely used applications such as word, email, publisher;
Excellent communication and demonstrated teamwork skills;
Qualifications must meet definition under MDS-RAI guidelines.

Qualifications

Leisureworld Caregiving Centre – Cheltenham is home to 170 residents and currently has an opening for a Permanent Full-time Programs Manager. The initial assignment is for 75 hours bi-weekly, subject to change based on the operational needs or under the discretion of the manager.

The Program Manager is a member of the management team who reports to the Director of Administration and is responsible for managing, training, and mentoring employees, as well as co-ordinating, planning, scheduling, implementing and evaluating all programs and activities within the Programs Department. This includes planning and ensuring the provision of a wide range of services and activities to meet the residents’ physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES (But not limited to):
• Direct, co-ordinate, approve/plan, schedule, implement, and evaluate resident activities while ensuring a wide range of activity and leisure programs that meet the residents’ physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs.
• On-going assessment of individual resident activity and leisure requirements, interests and abilities in order to identify needs, develop appropriate supports to optimize resident involvement, and introduce new and/or modified activities/programs/services as applicable.
• Works with the Director of Administration in budget development and maintains the approved budget. Facilitates department budgets by ensuring sufficient resources/equipment are available through budget preparation, maintenance and the hiring of appropriate and adequate staffing levels.
• Assist and Support the Residents’ Council by holding meetings and voicing their concerns and suggestions, and in turn, responding to issues raised by the residents.
• Ensure that the Programs Department operates in compliance with the relevant provincial standards and legislation, as well as the organization policies and procedures.
• In collaboration with the Nursing Department, implement and/or support the restorative care program.
• Lead, co-ordinate, and evaluate the facility Spiritual Care program.
• Coordinate and lead the home-specific Spiritual Care Committee.
• Promote a multidisciplinary approach to resident care by ongoing liaison with other departments in relation to individual resident’s needs and participation in the care planning process.
• Ensure effective communication with all residents, family members, staff and volunteers.
• Facilitate departmental meetings and participate in home specific committees.
• Participate in multidisciplinary care conferences and corporate conferences as required.
• Act as a resource and support for the Programs Department by implementing, as well as educating and presenting on best practices to staff.
• Administer a quality assurance program for the Programs Department in keeping with the “Continuous Quality Improvement” program for the facility. This includes but is not limited to monthly audits and program evaluation.
• Seek opportunities to collaborate with other therapy programs i.e. pet therapy, music therapy, art therapy, and to connect the home with the community.

Human Resources Specific:
• Recruits, hires, trains, promotes, transfers and dismisses department staff in consultation with the Director of Administration and Human Resources.
• Schedules work required for all department staff.
• Supervises all performance related activities of the department staff.
• Handles labour relation issues, including disciplining staff, according to the union contract and Human Resources guidelines. Engages Director of Administration and Human Resources department for advice as needed.
• Conducts staff appraisals on an annual basis.
• Provides in-service opportunities for all staff to enhance staff performance.
• Ensures orientation is provided for all new employees of the department.

Occupational Health & Safety – Manager/Supervisor Responsibilities
include but are not limited to:
• Take every reasonable precaution for the protection of the workers;
• Ensure a worker wears personal protective equipment and protective devices and clothing as required by the Employer;
• Advise the worker of any potential or actual health and safety hazards present in the workplace and ensure workers work in a manner required by the OHSA and the regulations;
